Are peptides legal? Short answer: it depends on the peptide and how it's sold.

2026 timeline

  1. The FDA announced restrictions on the active ingredients used in mass-marketed compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide. AJMC

  2. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that about 14 of the 19 peptides on the FDA's Category 2 list would be moved off it. AJMC

  3. The FDA announced it would remove 12 peptides from Category 2 and scheduled an advisory committee meeting on seven of them. The removal took effect after a seven-day notice period. Goodwin

  4. The Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee recommended 6 of the 7 peptides for the 503A bulks list and recommended against DSIP. FDA scientific staff had recommended against all seven. Frier Levitt

  5. A committee meeting is expected on five more peptides: LL-37, Dihexa, injectable GHK-Cu, PEG-MGF and Melanotan II. Goodwin

  6. The FDA decides whether to accept the July recommendations. Adding a substance to the 503A list requires notice-and-comment rulemaking, which can take 12 to 24 months. AJMC

What "Category 1" and "Category 2" mean

The FDA sorts ingredients that pharmacies have asked to compound with into categories while it evaluates them:

Source: FDA, bulk drug substances used in compounding under Section 503A.

What is the 503A bulks list?

503A pharmacies compound medications for individual patients with a prescription. The 503A bulks list is the list of ingredients the FDA allows them to compound with beyond those that already have a USP monograph or are part of an FDA-approved drug. Getting a peptide onto that list is what the July 2026 votes were about.

Off Category 2 doesn't mean approved

This is the most common mistake in coverage of the 2026 changes. Removing a peptide from Category 2 does not, by itself, make it eligible for compounding under 503A, and it doesn't make it an FDA-approved drug. A committee recommendation doesn't either: the FDA still has to act, including through formal rulemaking.

What about "research use only" peptides?

Products labeled "research use only" or "not for human consumption" aren't FDA-approved drugs, and they aren't compounded medications prescribed to a patient. The 2026 changes on this page are about which ingredients compounding pharmacies may use. They don't change the status of research-use-only products.

Frequently asked questions

Is BPC-157 FDA approved?

No. BPC-157 isn't FDA-approved for any use. It was removed from Category 2 in April 2026, and an FDA advisory committee recommended it for the 503A bulks list in July 2026. The FDA hasn't acted on that recommendation.

Is TB-500 legal?

TB-500 isn't an FDA-approved drug. Like BPC-157, it came off Category 2 in April 2026 and was recommended for the 503A list in July 2026, and it's waiting on FDA action.

When will the FDA decide?

There's no announced date. The committee's vote is nonbinding, and adding a substance to the 503A list requires notice-and-comment rulemaking, which one analysis estimates can take 12 to 24 months.

Can my doctor prescribe BPC-157 now?

A committee recommendation doesn't place a peptide on the 503A list, so the July vote alone doesn't authorize pharmacies to compound it. Ask your doctor and pharmacist what they can legally provide today.

How often is this page updated?

We check it whenever the FDA announces a change and at least monthly. The "Last checked" date at the top shows the latest review. Spotted something out of date? Tell us.
